#1 Mount Nuang, Selangor

Mount Nuang is at the borders of Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang. Although Mount Nuang is not a tall mountain, it still takes some effort to climb. For some super hikers, it may take just a day to hike up and ascend back down. However, for most people it may require a two-day trip. Do not worry as there are shelters and campsites available for you on the way.

#2 Mount Kinabalu, Sabah

Mount Kinabalu, majestically looms over the surrounding rainforest of Mount Kinabalu National Park at the UNESCO World Heritage site in Sabah. This majestic mountain is the tallest in Malaysia and over 40, 000 people have attempted to reach the top of the mountain every year. However, not all have managed to succeed.

You don’t need any special hiking equipment to triumph over Mount Kinabalu as it is one of the most conquerable peaks in the world.

#3 Mount Jerai, Kedah

Mount Jerai may not be the tallest of mountains in Malaysia, but it was formerly known as ‘Kedah Peak’. From the summit, you will be able to witness the glorious view of the surrounding

flatlands. Located near Sungai Petani but not far from Penang island, this mountain is a massive limestone outcrop that rises 1200 meter above sea level and was once an important navigational landmark for many spice traders.

When you visit Penang’s mainland, you’ll be able to spot the mountain from across the sea. So, be sure to take some pictures once you’ve spotted it!

#4 Mount Gagau, Pahang

Mount Gayong, another mountain in the Malay Peninsula, is also a favourite site for mountain climbers. Plus, let’s not forget that it is one of the tallest mountains in the country at 2,173 metres. It only takes about an hour or so to reach the peak of Mount Korbu, a mountain in Hulu Kinta, Perak.

In order to hike this mountain, you would require a decent fitness level or at least have some previous hiking experiences. If you’re new, it’s important and best to hire a local hiker as the trails are rather poorly signposted and sometimes not even signposted at all.

#5 Mount Tahan, Pahang

The highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia is located within the Taman Negara National Forest in Pahang is the most challenging hike you might experience. It is considered to be the most exciting yet difficult mountain to hike upwards. The trek itself is more than 100 kilometres long and requires you to trek your way through the rainforest, rivers and cross other mountains and this can take a whole lot of your time. If you’re planning to tackle this mountain, be sure you are well experienced and bring a guide along with you.
