Craving for onion rings, but can’t have them because you’re trying to stay away from greasy foods? What if we told you that onion rings could be healthy?
With the use of an air-fryer, it is possible to enjoy your favourite crispy snack but minus the oil.
Here’s a healthier version of oil-free onion rings paired with a comeback sauce that’s tangy and sweet at the same time.
OIL-FREE ONION RINGS

INGREDIENTS | |

2 | Large Egg |
1 | Large Sweet onion peeled, cut crosswise to desired thickness |
½ cup | All purpose flour |
1 tsp | Smoked paprika |
¼ tsp | Garlic powder |
1 tsp | Kosher salt, divided into half |
½ tsp | Black pepper |



METHOD:
- In a large bowl, stir flour, smoked paprika, garlic powder, half teaspoon salt and black pepper together.
- In a shallow dish, lightly beat the eggs and water together.
- Next, take another shallow dish, add the panko breadcrumbs and the remaining half teaspoon of salt and mix it well.
- Dredge onion rings in flour mixture and shake off the excess.
- Then, dip in the egg mixture and allow the excess to drip off.
- Lastly, drop the onion ring in the panko mixture and coat it well.
- Repeat (step 4 to 6) for all onion rings.
- Subsequently, coat both sides of the onion rings with cooking spray and place them in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
- Cook in batches at 170°C for 20 minutes until golden brown and crispy on both sides.
- Turn the onion rings in the first 10 minutes, allowing the other side to cook well.

COMEBACK SAUCE

INGREDIENTS | |
---|---|
¼ cup | Plain Greek yogurt |
2 tbsp | Mayonnaise |
½ tbsp | Lemon, squeezed 1 tbsp |
1 tsp | Ketchup |
1 tsp | Dijon mustard |
¼ tsp | Garlic powder |
¼ tsp | Paprika |
Add salt if necessary |



METHOD
- While waiting for the onion rings to air-fry, in a small bowl, stir together yogurt, mayonnaise, ketchup, dijon mustard, garlic powder, paprika and lemon juice until smooth.
- Cover and place in the refrigerator.
- Serve at the side of onion rings.
