To be fair, being a perfectionist means that you are detail-oriented and want the very best when it comes to your work, but it could also backfire on you. It could get in the way of advancing your career because you’re too hung up on your mistakes to take a step forward.
Here’re a few signs that you’re being a little too hard on yourself and need to ease up a bit.
Not accepting compliments
When someone compliments you, do you counter with why you don’t deserve that praise? Well, it’s time to just say ‘thank you’ because you worked hard on something and the results were pleasing.
Making excuses
“I got my dream job but there probably weren’t many applicants.”
“That was an awesome presentation, but it would be even better if I had more time.”
Why take away your accomplishments? You’re investing time and energy into making your accomplishments less grand when you could’ve used the time and energy into accomplishing more. Stop with the excuses and focus on the first half of those sentences!
What do you think?
It is never wrong to ask questions and insights from others but what if you do this when you’re the actual expert in that field? It sounds like you don’t trust your own abilities and need the approval of others. Give yourself more credit and have more faith in your abilities!
Not everything’s your fault
It is very tempting to spiral and blame yourself for every little thing that goes wrong. If your client is late to an important meeting due to a massive thunderstorm, you shouldn’t blame yourself. Repeat this to yourself: Some things are out of your control and this isn’t your fault.
