Know Your Rights!

The United Nations have declared 10 December as International Human Rights Day and this year will be the 70th year that the organisation is commemorating this special day. For 2018, the theme is ‘Stand up for human rights’.

Around the world, voices are still being suppressed and many are not able to lead the life they dream of due to the violation of human rights that’s displayed through abuse, ignorance, oppression and so on.

As a community, we have a voice and it is important for us to protect the world we live in, to ensure that every individual is treated equally. Although there is still much work to be done, the world of human rights has definitely positively evolved and together, we can make an even bigger change.

In conjunction with this important day, here are some facts about human rights.

  • 603 million women live in countries where domestic violence is not considered a crime yet.
  • The five basic human rights from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are the right to equality, freedom, life, freedom from slavery and freedom from torture or degrading treatment.
  • Approximately 27 million people around the world are enslaved by the human trafficking trade.
  • More than 300,000 children under 18 are being exploited as child soldiers.
  • Human rights are relevant to all of us and whenever these values are abandoned, we are all at a greater risk.

Let’s stand up for our rights and the rights of others. Use your voice to make a change.
