Healthy Ageing, Happy Ageing

Everyone should have the opportunity to live a long happy and healthy life. Though on the contrary, the environment that we live in is the number one factor that lead to unhealthy lifestyles as well as exposure to health risks such as pollution.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), healthy ageing is about creating an environment that allows people to do things they value in their lives along with the ability to live a healthy lifestyle.

So, in order to keep that ‘fountain of youth’ flowing, here are a few things you can do:

Healthy food for thought
A healthy diet isn’t just about maintaining a balanced weight, but it can help protect yourself from serious health conditions such as heart diseases, cancer, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Disease that occur more commonly among older adults. Eating a colourful variety of food, helps you get all the necessary nutrients your body needs in order to stay healthy and energised.

Get moving
According to the JAMA Network Open Study, it shows that people who exercise regularly will see a drop in their risk of developing diseases that are tied to ageing. If you’re not keen on joining the gym or performing High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), you can always choose activities that suit you, such as jogging, swimming, or even joining a sports team. As long
as you’re fit, you’re good!

Participate in activities you enjoy
A study on Social Disconnectedness, Perceived Isolation, and Health among Older Adults found that social isolation is linked to high blood pressure, depression as well as lower cognitive abilities. Therefore, try and engage in activities that are meaningful to you. It can
be anything from gardening, to volunteering in your community or spending time with your grandchildren, friends and family.
