What we mean is, congratulations on making the wonderful choice of using a reusable water bottle to reduce your carbon footprint and lessening the amount of plastics going into landfills. However, some reusable water bottles aren’t very friendly when it comes to cleaning it. Other than strange smells, bacteria and even fungi can start growing in your bottle if you’re not cleaning it properly!
Did You Know?
The source of bacteria going into and growing in your bottle is actually… your mouth! To prevent the build up of bacteria, look for reusable water bottles with wide mouths without bends, bevels and hard to clean crevices.
To ensure that your bottle is 100 percent clean, every week, gather all the reusable bottles you use, immerse then in a bucket of clean water and drop a bottle cleaning effervescent tablet that’s used to clean baby bottles and nipples.
If you lead a pretty hard knock life, perhaps a stainless steel bottle would be better for your lifestyle. Besides, stainless steel doesn’t crack or get scratched as easily as plastic bottles which prevents bacteria from growing in those cracks that you might not be able to see.
If your bottle has a straw, wash it with a brush every day after use because this is another place where bacteria loves to live in. Imagine sucking up tons of bacteria every time you take a sip of your water! Yuck!
Wash out your bottle daily with a gentle brush for plastic bottles to prevent bacterial and fungal growth. Remember to let it drip and air-dry upside down on a drying rack.
Glass bottles are also a great option as a beverage container because it doesn’t leach harmful chemicals such as BPA (Bisphenol A) and won’t absorb residual tastes or smells from other drinks. Additionally, they’re also dishwasher safe which is a great way to ensure the cleanliness of your bottle.
