A unique fun run brings Malaysians of all races together to celebrate the nation’s love for durian
Instead of the usual Sunday morning aroma of coffee and toast (or more accurately—roti canai and teh tarik), the SS2 neighbourhood was filled with the unmistakable smell of durian in the air. By 7 a.m. on 24 August 2025, SS2 Park, Petaling Jaya was already alive with laughter and adrenaline, as thumping senamrobik beats set the pace for hundreds of Malaysians warming up for the Durian Sarong Run 2025.

At the start line, runners of every race stood proudly in their kain batik, while the beats of a lion dance and traditional Indian dhol blended together, raising spirits before the fun 5km challenge ahead. The rhythm harmonised in unison, an uplifting sound that felt both powerful and heartwarming, showing how traditions could fit together so seamlessly.

Running for a cause
The event was held as a charity run. Kampung Tunku assemblywoman YB Lim Yi Wei shared that proceeds would go to schools within the constituency, while the run also tied into the Visit Selangor 2025 campaign. For a small registration fee, participants received a race pack with a batik-inspired T-shirt, finisher medal, bib, and e-certificate. The real prize though? A hefty pack of fresh XO durian from Dking, waiting at the finish line—perfect to savour right there or to bring home.

After crossing the line, runners quickly collected their medals, tucked into breakfast, and rehydrated with Hydroco, a refreshing 100% pure coconut drink provided by Wellesta Truelife. Once all had finished, the morning carried on in true Malaysian fashion, with multicultural dance performances that showcased the country’s rich heritage.

The celebration continues
The Durian Sarong Run may only be 5km, but it carried something beyond the distance: a celebration of unity, culture, and of course, Malaysia’s undying love for the King of Fruit.
