Snacks made from scratch are always the best and especially for children, going through the process of making meals from scratch makes it all worth it as you are absolutely aware of all the ingredients in your child’s food. Plus, you’re also able to limit unhealthy ingredients and perhaps even inject an extra dose of nutrients into their snacks.
School time does require lots of energy and hence, snacks are very important and it’s also good to ensure that they’re just as healthy as well as being delicious.
Here are two snack suggestions that takes no more than 20 minutes to prepare and cook. Enjoy!
Pizza toasts
Ingredients
- 2 slices wholegrain bread
- 1 tbsp sugar-free tomato based pizza sauce
- 2 slices ham (you could also substitute this with slices of chicken breast)
- 4 slices tomatoes
- A handful of mozzarella cheese
- A pinch of dried parsley
Note: Cut the pizza toasts into cubes to make it easier for your child to snack on them.
Method
- Place both slices of bread on a toaster tray.
- With a tablespoon, spoon the tomato sauce on the bread and gently spread it all over the bread with the back of the spoon.
- Then, place tomatoes and ham on the bread slices.
- Top it with mozzarella cheese and sprinkle some dried parsley.
- Toast the bread for about 5 minutes at medium-high heat.
- Allow the bread to cool down for a few minutes before packing it into your child’s lunch box.
Kale chips
Ingredients
- 200 g Fresh kale
- A pinch of salt
- A pinch of black pepper
Method
- Rinse kale leaves and allow it to air dry or if time is short, use a paper towel and pet dry.
- Then, arrange kale on a baking tray. Do make sure that the leaves do not overlap as this could affect the end result.
- Sprinkle salt and pepper on kale. Note: For additional flavours, consider sprinkling some parmesan cheese or seaweed flakes.
- Bake at 150⁰C for about 8 minutes. If the leaves are smaller, you might want to reduce the baking time.
- Remove tray from oven and allow to cool before storing the kale chips in an air-tight container.
Note: These healthy chips can be stored for about two to three days in an air-tight food container.
