Sensing the Sensibility in Sensitive Skin

Dr. Peter Katz, a board-certified dermatologist with Forefront Dermatology introduces sensitive skin saying, “Before you label your skin as sensitive, know this: having sensitive skin falls into a bit of a skincare grey area. The best way to establish your skin type is to pay close attention to your skin’s reaction.”

So, it must be declared that having sensitive skin is not a disease instead, it’s a symptom of another condition. Take matters into your own hands and draw a line between ingredients to add and omit in your line of cosmetic products. Read on to find out which ones.

What is sensitive skin?

It presents itself via stinging, burning, itchiness, redness, or tightness. Here’s what dermatologists look for when diagnosing sensitive skin:

  • Pustules, or skin bumps.
  • Very dry skin.
  • Blushing and skin flushing.

Sometimes, medical conditions like rosacea, eczema, and allergic contact dermatitis could be mistaken for a simple rash from a reaction. Thus, you must do your homework and speak to a professional about your symptoms.

What to avoid for sensitive skin?

Navigating cosmetic products if you have sensitive skin can seem like an endless tribulation. Next time, stay away from these ingredients:

  • HARSH EXFOLIANTS
Examples of ingredients in a cleanser are alpha hydroxy acids, like glycolic acid, and physical exfoliators, like granules in a facial scrub.
  • NATURAL PRODUCTS
Organic or natural labelled products might contain hidden allergic and irritating ingredients. For example essential oils like tea tree oil and lavender oil.
  • FRAGRANCES
Peppermint, bergamot, tea tree, and citrus fragrances can lead to flare-ups. Go for bottles that say ‘fragrance-free’.

If you are experiencing difficulty breathing, swelling and blisters, immediately see a doctor or dermatologist. For all sensitive skin types, take care of your skin and it’ll take care of you!
