Endemic and Pandemic

What are the differences?

It is often said that we grow the most in times of challenges that pushes us out of our comfort zone. Presently, it is safe to say that the Covid-19 pandemic has challenged us. From learning to work from home, attending online meetings and classes as well as juggling work and family together, living through the pandemic has taught us some of the things we never expect to do.

Adding into this would also be us continuously learning about Covid-19 and the pandemic.

Now that the government has announced loosening a few restrictions such as dining out, travel updates and more, does this mean the pandemic is coming to an end?

Since we’re on the topic of pandemic, how do we know if we’re currently living in a pandemic or endemic? Let’s start with the basic definitions:

PANDEMIC
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a pandemic is declared when a disease grows out of control and the daily cases increase more than the day prior to it.

ENDEMIC
On the other hand, an endemic refers to a disease outbreak that presents itself at certain regions or areas. For example, Malaria is considered endemic in certain countries.

Let it be a pandemic or an endemic, it is still crucial for us to stay cautious at all times. This includes wearing masks when you’re in public spaces, regular hand washing and sanitising as well as social distancing to avoid being infected by the Covid-19.
